“I wanna tell you about a girl…”
Saturday, February 3rd, 2007Priscilla Ahn has a sweet, clear voice… she seems to sing effortlessly. She is sincere and lovely… confident, yet modest. Shy, yet commands attention. It’s very refreshing to see someone of this caliber be so down to earth.
I booked Priscilla several times at the Nova Express, but hadn’t seen her perform in over a year. I was pleasantly surprised to see how far she has come.
Priscilla plays guitar, harmonica, and banjo. She also uses live looping to create symphonies with her voice and her instruments. Her band includes a cellist, a stand-up bass player, and a drummer. Everyone in the band was very good, but I was particularly struck by the cellist, Oliver Kraus. It wasn’t just his technical ability… he possesses a rare expressiveness that is absolutely captivating.
I had to fight tears throughout the entire show and I don’t know exactly why. Maybe it was the beauty of her voice, maybe it was just watching something so sincere, maybe it was the interplay between her and the cellist, maybe it was the wine… whatever it was, I want to do it again!
She has one show left as part of her KCRW residency at the Hotel Café and I urge you not to miss it.
